No Crime – Get a Life! is predominantly aimed at young people in the 11-13 age group and aims to raise awareness of the criminal justice process.
Petty crime can seem quite attractive and glamorous to young people who are unaware that it can be the first step towards a life of crime, and the misery that it can bring to them, their victims and their families. No Crime – Get a Life! uses all the agencies involved in the criminal justice process to communicate this message to this impressionable age group in a way that is both effective and memorable.
Coordinated by a Norfolk PACT Project Coordinator, multi-agency teams will go into the County’s secondary schools to deliver this dynamic workshop-based programme. The participating agencies are: the Criminal Justice Board; Her Majesty’s Courts (Magistrates); Norfolk Constabulary; Her Majesty’s Prison Service; the Youth Offending Team and Victim Support. The workshop takes a minimum of a half day.
The pupils start by watching a DVD with a dramatisation of a young person whose petty vandalism soon leads to something that is more serious. There then follows a series of breakout sessions with the various agencies in smaller groups giving the young people the opportunity to meet face to face with representatives of each of the agencies, to find out what part they play in the Criminal Justice System. This also enables them to discuss crime and anti-social behaviour, how to avoid getting involved in it, how to avoid being a victim of it, and how to deal with it when it happens, from the perspective of each of the agencies.
This programme originated in South Wales and is now part of a highly successful roll-out across the whole of Wales as part of the All Wales Police Schools Liaison Programme. Norfolk PACT believes communities in Norfolk would benefit greatly from adopting this programme, and plans to pilot the project in Norfolk during the Autumn 2007 term. This will then be rolled out across Norfolk in the next year or so.
